Vetmedin contains pimobendan, which works in two ways to help your dog's heart. It increases the sensitivity of the heart muscle to calcium, improving its ability to contract, and it also widens blood vessels, reducing the workload on the heart.
Suitability +
Vetmedin is specifically formulated for dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF) due to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) or valvular insufficiency (mitral and/or tricuspid regurgitation). It can also be used in dogs with preclinical DCM to delay the onset of CHF or death, and in dogs with cardiomegaly secondary to preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease to reduce heart size and potentially increase survival time. Do not use in dogs with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or conditions where increased cardiac output is not recommended, such as aortic stenosis. Possible side effects include a moderate increase in heart rate, vomiting, transient diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy. If you notice any of these, consult your vet. Always consult with your veterinarian before using this medication and follow their monitoring advice.
Care and Instructions +
Administer Vetmedin capsules orally at a dose range of 0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg twice daily, ideally 0.25 mg/kg twice daily, approximately one hour before feeding. Follow your vet's specific instructions. Store below 25°C (air conditioning).
